Night of Nights and Near Apex of My Life
Last was something else. Back from Dachau, I head over to a friends house. Missing dinner I eat scraps of food, crackers, half a block of brie, the most delicious banana bread as baked by Krista, and drink an entire bottle of wine. Then it’s go time. We bike over to the Heiligenberg, the clock strikes midnight, and we start climbing up. It’s a stream of drunk people with churches making their way up and down the mountain and in 40 min we reach the Thingstätte aka the amphitheater built by the Nazis. The ENTIRE amphitheater is covered by people drinking, bonfires, fire-breathers, fire throwers, and drum circles. We keep drinking, watch the fire shows, and proceed to build our own fire. The entirety of the night was spent sitting by this fire, looking at the stars, talking to friends, and talking to other Germans and Europeans who were attracted to the warmth of the fire. By 4 am, our group around the fire included:
- 1 guy passed out - I saved his foot twice from catching on fire
- German hippies galore
- 2 guitars
- 1 bongo drum
- 2 guys with dreadlocks
- 1 creeper
- 1 German who is going to Maryland for study abroad!!!!
- weed
- more alcohol
By 5ish, me and 2 others went over the monastery, hoped over the locked fence, climbed a ruined tower, and watched the sunrise. The 3 of us meandered our way back down the mountain, somehow ran into our other 3 friends, and reached the bottom of the mountain at 6:38. Made my way back home through an empty city, watched the sun keep rising over the Neckar river, and made it back home at 7:18. Night of Nights.
